This window of carved teak in a wall of carved volcanic stone cost a lot, even for the Balinese; but they save and spend to make their houses as traditional as they could be. The teak is from Borneo as Bali does not have hardwood supply; but the dark gray volcanic stone is from the island which it is famed for. The design contains traditional oriental and Hindu motifs.

How does Bali sustain its art? The easy answer will be demand as the island is a tourist haven. Actually, art is embedded in the Balinese. Early in life, they are taught art not just in school but in their communities. While each villages are renowned for some craft or the other, Balinese kids has a lot to choose from dancing, cooking, singing, painting to carving. Appreticeship to the village master is readily available for a minimal fee or even free, depending on the parent's income.

Terence, my mom will love you for your "beautiful young" comment. it's the combination of natural light and low resolution which tricks you. we were joining a local ceremony during this time so we all borrowed and wore Balinese outfits. thanks!
